Flora and Fauna

Muthurajawela Wetland Boat Tour

The Tamarind Tree Garden Resort is situated near the Muthurajawela Wetlands in southern Sri Lanka of the Negombo Lagoon, which is a popular tourist attraction. Covering 3,068 hectares, the wetlands are home to over 100 species of animals, and visitors can explore the wetlands on a boat tour offered by the resort with prior reservation. The wetlands were declared a nature reserve in 1996 and have a rich history with ancient treasures.

The paddy fields are a unique feature of the Muthurajawela Wetlands and have a long history in Sri Lanka, dating back over 2,500 years. They are irrigated farmlands used for cultivating rice, which is a staple food in Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia. Paddy cultivation was initially carried out by indigenous communities but later became a major source of income for colonial powers after the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century.
